When Ants Depend on Plants and Plants Depend on Ants

چکیده

Plants use many strategies to defend themselves against animals that eat plants, also called herbivores. One clever way some myrmecophytes, do this is by teaming up with ants. Myrmecophytes are plants have evolved close relationships In return for protection from herbivores, myrmecophytes provide ants food and/or shelter. Sounds like a great deal, right? Yes, but sometimes working can be tricky plant. Because cannot choose the ant bodyguards they get, must balance their needs of defenders. article, we introduce classic example beneficial ants, describe how and in these depend on each other, investigate ant-dependent interact various species.

The energetics of running stability: costs of transport in grass-cutting ants depend on fragment shape.

Grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) carry fragments that can be many times heavier and longer than the ants themselves and it is important for them to avoid falling over during load transport. To investigate whether the energetic costs of transport are affected by the need to maintain stability, the rate of CO(2) production was measured in both unladen workers and workers carrying standardi...

Impacts of invasive plants on carbon pools depend on both species' traits and local climate.

Invasive plants can alter ecosystem properties, leading to changes in the ecosystem services on which humans depend. However, generalizing about these effects is difficult because invasive plants represent a wide range of life forms, and invaded ecosystems differ in their plant communities and abiotic conditions. We hypothesize that differences in traits between the invader and native species c...

An ancient tripartite symbiosis of plants, ants and scale insects.

In the Asian tropics, a conspicuous radiation of Macaranga plants is inhabited by obligately associated Crematogaster ants tending Coccus (Coccidae) scale insects, forming a tripartite symbiosis. Recent phylogenetic studies have shown that the plants and the ants have been codiversifying over the past 16-20 million years (Myr). The prevalence of coccoids in ant-plant mutualisms suggest that the...

Ants Sow the Seeds of Global Diversification in Flowering Plants

BACKGROUND The extraordinary diversification of angiosperm plants in the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods has produced an estimated 250,000-300,000 living angiosperm species and has fundamentally altered terrestrial ecosystems. Interactions with animals as pollinators or seed dispersers have long been suspected as drivers of angiosperm diversification, yet empirical examples remain sparse or inc...

Dataset on the abundance of ants and Cosmopolites sordidus damage in plantain fields with intercropped plants

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "Ant abundance and Cosmopolites sordidus damage in plantain fields as affected by intercropping" (A.G. Dassou, D. Carval, S. Dépigny, G.H Fansi, P. Tixier, 2015) [1]. This article describes how associated crops maize (Zea mays), cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) and bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) intercropped i...
